Thoda Patience, Thodi Logic...?

Driving for long hours is almost a given to most Delhiites who work. I am no exception. As I still cannot afford a chauffer, at times driving does become a chore! On every trip I come across hundreds of bikers. 99 out of them suffer from this terrible tendence of weaving in & out of speeding traffic columns. Many a times they manage to be at right angles to the flow. As many of them appear, almost out of nowhere, on my left corner, they literally keep me on my toes, all the time.

It's quite apparent that most drivers in Delhi / NCR are simply unaware about the traffic rules & therefore, to them overtaking from left or right is of complete insignificance. It takes about a week for a newcomer to understand traffic attitude of Delhi, thereafter, one generally comes to term with it. Very much the same way the world is, with terrorism, financial scams etc.

However, it's interesting to note that apparent "economic prosperity" or the lack of it, reflects greatly in behaviour of the citizens. At least in India. For example, one would find much less aggression on roads of Orissa or Kerala, compared to that of Delhi or Gurgaon.

As my work brings me to the revered Connaught Place everyday, I am also vulnerable to at least 3 traffic signals, every trip. On an average I get to stop at two, unless I am somehow very fortunate.
Familiar beggars can be found on these signals, without fail. IF you notice, you'll find that a majority of the beggars are physically challenged. Many of them would be hopping across on crutches, at times even on their only foot. The agony written all over their persona.

Then the signal turns to green & I engage the gears. Even before the wheels complete their first rotations, bikers, like bats out of hell would be all around, horns blaring - mobile phones in talk-mode - rear pillion rider in deep conversation with the rider etc. etc. These bikers have little regard for the others! Well, that's fine with me.
What keeps puzzling me is something else. Do these bikers ever realise that this tearing hurry will simply add few more to the thousands of biker-deaths every year? That they have family who "wants & needs" them bcak home, safe? That it's only water that can find it's own level - not vehicles? That they have responsibilities to live for?
Why can't these deaths on two wheels, completely exposed to the elements & worse drivers, be "Thoda Patient"? Frankly, this threading in & out does not save much time either!
4000 may be a very small number of deaths given our burgeoning population, but that's a few thousand families left to the vagaries of life!
Whose responsibility is it, to drill such "logic" into the barely guarded heads of our impatient bikers?

Does that one-legged beggar ever remind them of how miserable impatience can be?

But then, did the over-qualified bankers or MNC Seniors realise similar mistakes in their fast-tracks to success? Unlikely!
